Red Auerbach w/ Larry Bird’s Kicks @ Quincy Market
After reading ‘When The Game Was Ours’ I have grown an appreciation for Larry Bird that I never had.
You see, I’ve got a dad who recorded every ‘Showtime Laker’ playoff game on VHS and still watches them to this day, as if their live - yelling at the TV when the Lake show should have drove to the basket or smacking his fists against the floor on a lousy call by the refs. His enthusiasm took my enjoyment of the sport to another level. And with this, it was hard to see other teams compare to the Lakers.
I mean I grew up with Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Byron… who could ask for more?
But, the book shed some light on Larry Bird that I had never heard about. I knew he wasn’t a loud player or a show-off, but the book explains how he always kept a deep understanding of his roots - which is incredibly admirable.
Man, I wish the game now was like it was back then. It was something else.
